Data Storage Policy

 Introduction

ITS manages a network of centralized computer systems operating in a distributed computing environment. AFS, Oracle database, and long-term data storage space are available as defined below. All individual, departmental and storage locker space as defined here is provided in AFS on high-availability storage arrays under 24 hour, 7 day a week maintenance, and is centrally backed up by ITS. AFS space is accessible from any of the ITS login and research servers and from departmental and desktop systems running AFS client software. For more information on AFS, see [ http://help.unc.edu/?id=215 ] Introduction to AFS.

 AFS Allocations

 Individual Allocations

Individuals affiliated with UNC who create an Onyen are eligible to receive, at no charge, an entitlement of data storage space for their use as members of the University community. The entitlement for such space is 100 megabytes for undergraduates and affiliates, and 250 megabytes for faculty, staff, graduate and professional students, and student organizations. Web space is included in this allocation.

 Departmental Allocations

ITS recognizes that the allocations available through individual space may not be adequate to meet departmental storage requirements. Department chairs can request, at no charge, ten (10) gigabytes of AFS space to meet departmental needs. Each faculty member is eligible for up to 10 gigabytes additional space within the departmental hierarchy for research and teaching. The total amount of AFS space available to a department is 10 gigabytes * ( 1 + # of full-time equivalent faculty members). The department must appoint an AFS administrator to manage this space. This administrator will be responsible for allocating the departmental space and defining access rights for departmental users. Training for AFS departmental administrators will be provided by ITS as necessary. To request departmental space, the dean or department head must complete the [ http://www.unc.edu/atn/forms/deptreq.htm ] Request for AFS space form. Faculty members may request space within the departmental hierarchy by completing [ http://www.unc.edu/atn/forms/deptreq.htm ] Request for AFS space form.

 Storage Lockers

Additional AFS storage space is also available to individuals or departments for an annual fee, and must be billed to an University account number (X-XXXXX-XXXX). This space is allocated in one gigabyte increments with a single, uniform rate of $100 per gigabyte/year, and payable in advance. Complete the [ http://www.unc.edu/atn/forms/deptreq.htm ] Request for AFS space form, to request this space. For more information, contact the HelpDesk via [ http://help.unc.edu/?id=3663 ] Other ITS Help Options.

 Temporary Storage Space (Scratch space)

ITS provides temporary storage in AFS space at /afs/isis/scratch. AFS scratch space is available wherever AFS is available. Please note that temporary (or scratch) space is not backed up, and data in scratch space may be deleted to free up space as needed. In general, the deletion policy for scratch space is FIFO; the oldest files are deleted as space is needed on these systems.

By default, any user can delete data in /afs/isis/scratch. To protect data from inadvertent deletion, create a subdirectory and change the ACLs appropriately. Refer to [ http://help.unc.edu/?id=215 ] Introduction to AFS for more information on managing ACLs.

 Course Space

There are three options available for instructors who wish to put their course content on the Web. First, you can request space for your course on the central Web server by completing the form at: https://onyen.unc.edu/cgi-bin/course_space/setup. You can also use the Blackboard course management system. To find out more about Blackboard, go to http://www.unc.edu/cit/bb. Similar to Course Web space, departmental AFS web space allows public access to course materials and tight control for the instructor. To help you decide which option is best for you and your instructional goals, go to [ http://its.unc.edu/tl/tli/coursespace ] Managing Course Space, or call the Center for Instructional Technology at (919) 962-6042 to talk to a consultant.

 Database Space for Oracle

In addition to AFS disk space allocations, ITS also provides limited storage on oracle.unc.edu. Requests for this space should be submitted by email to . If access is granted, undergraduates can receive 10 megabytes. Other users can receive 20 megabytes for Oracle usage (or 25 megabytes if Oracle indexing is used).

 Long-Term Storage

ITS also provides mass storage on an STK Tape Silo for individuals and departments. This space is managed under SAM-FS and is directly available on the ITS login servers and some research computers. It appears as disk space under the /ms directory. However, this space may be accessed remotely from any system using FTP to one of the above systems. To add mass storage access to your individual account, go to [ https://onyen.unc.edu/ ] Onyen Services and choose "Subscribe to Services." To obtain mass storage space for a department, submit a request to . See http://its.unc.edu/hpc/ms/ for policies regarding the use of the mass storage system.

 Data Access and Protection

ITS will make every reasonable effort to protect user data from unauthorized access and destruction. However, ITS cannot guarantee that data will not be compromised or destroyed. ITS will review and evaluate data storage rates and services on a regular basis.
