Introduction
This document walks you through the process of installing the OpenAFS Client for Windows on a campus computer running Windows Vista, Windows XP, or Windows 2000. It also includes configuration information for connecting to the UNC AFS file space. AFS is only supported on computers attached to the campus network.
It is recommended that you read these instructions completely before installing OpenAFS.
Requirements
In order to complete this installation, you will need the following:
- Your Onyen (campus network ID)
- Windows Vista, Windows XP, or Windows 2000
- A network connection to the campus network
- Administrative Rights on your computer to install software and control services
- Client for Microsoft Networks (should exist if you are already using AFS)
How to Install and Configure the OpenAFS Client Software
Install the OpenAFS Client Software
- Using your web browser, download the OpenAFS client from the UNC Shareware Distribution Site. If prompted, enter your Onyen and password. Save the file to a temporary location (such as your Desktop), and execute the self-extracting setup file by double-clicking it.
- You may be prompted to verify that you are a Student, Faculty, or Staff of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; click only if you are affiliated with the University.
- You will see the setup routine start; click to proceed with the installation.
- The installer may require a new version of the Windows Installer service if your version is too old. In this case, the setup routine will install the current version of Windows Installer (it is built in), and prompt you to reboot your computer. If this happens, reboot, and then double-click the setup program again to restart the installation.
- You will see the End-User License Agreement; click the radio button for and then click
- Click the button beside and then click if required.

- Accept the defaults or modify the selections to suit your needs, and then click to proceed.
- At this point, the setup program will copy the appropriate files to your hard drive. When it has completed, click . You may then be prompted to reboot; click to reboot, or if you need to close other programs first. You must reboot, however, before using OpenAFS.
Obtaining Tokens and Configuring the OpenAFS Client
- When your computer finishes rebooting, log back in with the same username you used to install the software.
- By default, AFS will be running when you log in. You will see a small icon of a padlock with a small red X beside it in the system tray (lower right, beside the clock).

- Click this padlock icon to bring up the OpenAFS Client.

- In order to use the OpenAFS Client, you will need to obtain your AFS tokens. Click Obtain New Tokens; enter your Onyen (for the User Name) and your password then click OK.

- Next you will need to map the AFS drive. Click Drive Letters > Add... ; you will then enter the information for the drive you want to map and then click OK.

- The default path for your personal H drive is in the form of \afs\isis.unc.edu\home\o\n\onyen; replace the 'o' with the first character of your Onyen, replace the 'n' with the second letter of your Onyen, then replace 'onyen' with your full Onyen.
- Your AFS drives are now ready to use. If you navigate to My Computer or Windows Explorer, you will see your mapped drives.
Advanced Configuration Settings
Toggling Automatic Starting of the AFS Service
If you use, or plan to use, OpenAFS on a regular basis, you will probably want to leave the default setting of AFS service starting automatically. This way, you will not have to go through the OpenAFS Client Wizard every time you want to access your mapped drives after a system reboot.
To change the default setting so that the AFS client to does not start automatically, click the padlock icon in the system tray to bring up the AFS Client dialog. Click and then uncheck the box beside . You can also uncheck the box beside if you do not want the padlock icon to show in the system tray.
If you need to stop the AFS Client Service at anytime without rebooting, you can click on the also found on this tab.
Automatically Obtaining AFS Tokens
You may also click the Configure AFS Client button on the Advanced tab to enable Integrated Login. Integrated Login can be used if the username and password that you use to log into Windows matches your Onyen username and password exactly. If that is the case and you want to automatically get tokens when you log into Windows, click the button on the Advanced tab and make sure the check box beside is selected, then click .

Upgrading from a Previous Version
If you have an earlier version of the AFS Client installed and want to upgrade, you must uninstall your previous version before installing OpenAFS. This is because of the differences in installer technologies in the older (IBM) versions as compared to the new open source version.
As you are uninstalling your old version from the Add/Remove Programs control panel, you will be asked if you want to preserve your previous settings. You can click here, and the installer will attempt to recreate the same drive mappings you used with the older version.
In some scenarios, it is not possible to retain your previous configuration, so it is recommended that you click the Drive Letters tab (or look in My Computer) and make note of the drive letters you used, and the AFS locations to which they mapped in case you need to recreate them manually.
