Before you can get an email account, you must first have a UNC PID (personal identification number) and you must be actively affiliated with UNC-Chapel Hill. Typically, being actively affiliated means that you are enrolled as a student in a course of study or you are a member of the faculty or staff. Information on [ http://www.pid.unc.edu/ ] obtaining a PID is available from the [ http://www.pid.unc.edu/ ] PID office.
Once you have a UNC PID, you may obtain your UNC email account by creating an Onyen (an acronym for "only name you'll ever need"). The Onyen is your user ID that will give you access to various electronic resources on campus. To create an Onyen, go to the [ http://onyen.unc.edu ] Onyen Management Page and click on the Create an Onyen button at the top of the page. Once you have created an Onyen and Onyen password, a UNC email account will be automatically created for you. Your email address will be onyen @email.unc.edu.
Should you ever need to manually subscribe to the email service, visit the [ http://onyen.unc.edu ] Onyen page and click on the Subscribe to Services button at the bottom of the page. After authenticating with your Onyen and password, verify that Email services (imap.unc.edu) appears in the left-hand column beneath Subscribed Services . If it does not, then choose it from the list of Unsubscribed Services on the right.
For more information about using UNC Email, review the [ http://help.unc.edu/?id=1140 ] HelpSite Email documentation.
