Customizing the MyUNC Portal

 Getting Started

To begin customizing your MyUNC page, point your browser to my.unc.edu . After you have logged in to the MyUNC home page, click on the Customize link in the upper right-hand corner of the screen:

This will take you to the screen where you can begin adding items to your portal:

Notice that the screen is divided into four sections (three columns): these sections represent the layout of the portlets - i.e. the links - as they will appear on your MyUNC portal screen. At the top of each section are two icons:

 Adding Portlets

Click on the left icon, as shown above. This will take you to the Add Portlets page, where you can begin selecting the portlets that you would like to include in this section:

On the left side of the screen above is the Available Portlets pane: items that you select here will appear in the Selected Portlets pane on the right.

Each portal on the screen leads to sub-topics associated with the link. Click on the MyUNC Portlets link (as below):

This expands the portlet options a little more:

The links are easier to read, and the Sports News Portlets link has expanded to include its sub-links. Drilling down further brings you to the portlets that you can add to your Selected Portlets pane. Clicking on Individual State News , for instance, leads to news portlets for all 50 states:

Clicking on one of the states - North Carolina, for example (as above) - moves this portlet to your Selected Portlets pane:

Clicking the magnifying glass next to the selection allows you to preview the item before selecting it.

 Moving Your Portlets

To modify your Selected Portlets pane, select the item that you want to move or delete, and then click on one of the buttons to the right of the pane. These buttons are explained below (and a couple of states have been added):

Once you are satisfied with your selections and their placement, click on the OK button in the upper right-hand corner of the screen:

This takes you back to the Customize Page , where you began - only now your selections are present in the column where you initially clicked the icon to begin adding portlets:

Just as on the Add Portlets screen, here you can modify your selections. For instance, you can Reset to Defaults (see button at top of screen), which will remove all the items from your portal except for the default items set by the site administrator.

The other button options are Hide , Show , Delete , and Move :

Hide : Removes the portlet from your portal page, but leaves it in your customization list for later reactivation. An inactive portlet is gray (see "North Carolina News" in the above image).

Show : Reactivates an inactive portlet: clicking the checkbox next to "North Carolina News" and then clicking the Show button changes the text from gray to blue.

Delete : Removes the portlet from your portal page and your customization list.

Move : Allows you to move the portlet from one region to another. Checking the box next to an item and then clicking the Move button (as above) gives you the following screen:

Clicking the radio button in another section - for instance, the upper left section, as above - and then clicking the Move Portlet button will move the "New Mexico News" portlet from its original position to the new section:

 Finishing Up

At this point, you can continue to add/move items using the procedure outlined in this document, or you can close the Customize Page . Clicking the Close button at the top of your screen takes you to the MyUNC page, where you can see the items you selected:

This is where you began - you can click the Customize link at the top of the page anytime to modify your MyUNC page.
