About this document
The following document describes the process of setting up existing audio and video files for streaming on the campus streaming server, Mediaserv. For information about streaming a live event over the Internet, refer to [ http://help.unc.edu/?id=3941 ] Webcasting with Mediaserv (campus streaming server).
Step 1: Setting up Space on Isis
The most common locations for streaming at UNC-Chapel Hill are:
-
Personal web directories (http://www.unc.edu/~youronyen). To stream files from your personal web space, you will first need to submit a request for a URL alias that points from the campus streaming server to your personal web space. Submit this request using the Online Help Request form at https://www.unc.edu/ar-bin/websub/index.pl.
-
"courses" web directories (located in the main http://www.unc.edu/courses/ directory). Streaming from courses web directories does not require a URL alias.
-
"depts," "projects," and "services" web directories. To stream from these directories on Mediaserv, you will first need to submit a request for a URL alias that points from Mediaserv to this directory. Submit this request using the Online Help Request form at https://www.unc.edu/ar-bin/websub/index.pl.
If you need to set up a new course or depts directory, you can submit your request online at https://www.unc.edu/ar-bin/websub/index.pl .
Step 2: Encoding Audio and Video Clips
The central campus streaming server, Mediaserv.unc.edu, runs Helix, an open-source version of RealNetworks' streaming software. Mediaserv.unc.edu supports RealMedia (.rm, .ra, .rv) and Windows Media formats (.wma, .wmv), as well as .mp3 and hinted QuickTime files (.mov and .mp4). Files in all other digital video and audio formats (e.g., .avi, .flv, .wav., .aif) will need to be encoded or converted into one of these formats before Mediaserv can stream them.

Note
QuickTime and .mp4 files that are not hinted cannot be streamed. And, unlike the other streamable file formats, they can't be linked to in the standard way. Refer to [ http://help.unc.edu/?id=5988 ] Preparing QuickTime (.mov and .mp4) Files for Streaming for further information and instructions.
Step 3: Uploading your Clips and Linking them to Mediaserv
Using the [ http://help.unc.edu/?id=215 ] AFS client or an [ http://help.unc.edu/?id=693 ] FTP client, upload the files to the web directory.
Step 4: Follow the instructions below to create links for the file formats supported by Mediaserv:
Note
Do not use:7070 in the URL as port 7070 is no longer supported.
RealMedia
open up your web browser and type:
http://mediaserv.unc.edu/ramgen/urlalias/directoryname/filename.rm where "urlalias" is the name of your url alias (if you have one), the word "courses" if you are streaming from a courses directory, or "yourisisid" if you are streaming from personal web space; "directoryname" is the name of your directory; and "filename" is the name of your file. This URL should reflect the structure of your web space with all the subdirectories leading to your file.
Windows Media
open up your web browser and type:
http://mediaserv.unc.edu/asxgen/urlalias/directoryname/filename.wmv (or .wma) where "urlalias" is the name of your url alias (if you have one), the word "courses" if you are streaming from a courses directory, or "yourisisid" if you are streaming from personal web space; "directoryname" is the name of your directory; and "filename" is the name of your file. This URL should reflect the structure of your web space with all the subdirectories leading to your file.
.mp3
open up your web browser and type:
http://mediaserv.unc.edu/ramgen/urlalias/directoryname/filename.mp3 where "urlalias" is the name of your url alias (if you have one), the word "courses" if you are streaming from a courses directory, or "yourisisid" if you are streaming from personal web space; "directoryname" is the name of your directory; and "filename" is the name of your file. This URL should reflect the structure of your web space with all the subdirectories leading to your file.
