Overview
Tivoli Storage Management (TSM) is enterprise level software that provides a data backup and restoration service for departmental servers. The following instructions provide a step-by-step guide to installing TSM on a Windows system.
Instructions
1. A member of the Enterprise Recovery Group needs to add your system, hereafter called node, to the server using the administrator GUI, and then add the node to the appropriate schedule.
2. If your node already has TSM, copy the dsm.opt file to your desktop. Stop the scheduler service and then uninstall the scheduler, then the program.
3. Use a web browser to access this web site: https://its2.unc.edu/esm/backup/TSM_Clients/Windows/. If this is a new install, copy the dsm.opt file located at the above site to your Desktop .
4. Access Tivoli Storage Manager help document for current IBM TSM client downloads.
5. Read the README files for latest news and APAR's for this client.
6. Download the executable file. On your machine, execute the package to install the TSM client. During the installation you will be prompted to choose the setup type, choose Typical . You will also be prompted for the location to install TSM, if you choose the defaults it will install in C:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM .
7. Go to Start > Programs > Tivoli Storage Manager > Backup Archive GUI . Follow the instructions to create a dsm.opt file or edit the dsm.opt file you saved to your desktop in Step 2. Edit the dsm.opt to customize for your machine noting the appropriate TCPServeraddress, listing the drives in the domain field identifying the drives to backup (the drive letter identified in the domain statement must match drives already defined on your system), and addressing the include/exclude statements. When the customization is complete, save the dsm.opt file in the baclient subdirectory of the directory where you installed TSM.
8. TSM needs port 1500 (communication from client to backup server) and port 1501 (communication from backup server to client) open in the firewall, which allows the backup server to initiate automated backups.
9. Go to Start > Programs > Tivoli Storage Manager > Backup Archive GUI . When prompted, enter the password provided by the TSM Administrator. Exit and load the GUI again. If it doesn't ask for the password again, then the password is successfully stored on your computer. If successful, go to the Utilities pulldown and choose the Setup Wizard to Configure a TSM Client Scheduler. Follow the instructions, choosing the defaults where possible. Check the Enable Event Logging box. Shutdown and Restart your system.
10. Select the baclient subdirectory of your TSM installation directory, then view the dsmsched.log file with Notepad. The last few lines in this file should say: "waiting to be contacted by the server" . If they do, your scheduler is ready. If they do not, review the instruction in Step 7 to make sure the password was saved successfully or contact the administrator.
11. If you want to perform a manual backup, use the GUI and on the menu options line select Actions and the Backup Domain . Do not include networked drives, only local drives. It will start immediately.
12. The day after any significant change to your client (TSM client or server software update, client operating system or hardware upgrade, etc.), check the results of the dsmsched.log file. If you have any errors, contact the TSM administrator. Otherwise, daily monitoring of your client is handled by our automated systems, which will alert you by email if problems occur.
