It is important to change your e-mail password on a regular basis to help prevent identity theft and unauthorized use. UNC requires that all students change their Onyen password every 90 days. It is also important to create a password that is difficult to crack. See the [ http://help.unc.edu/1552 ] UNC Help Desk for information on creating a strong password.
For your Isis e-mail account (UNC)
-
Go to http://onyen.unc.edu .
-
Click on "Manage Password."
-
Enter your Onyen and current password.
-
Enter and re-enter your new Onyen password.
-
Click "Change Password."
Note:

If you forget your Onyen password
If you have set up a "challenge response" (answers to personalized questions) at the Onyen Web site, you can use that tool to reset the password for your Onyen if you forget it.
-
Go to https://onyen.unc.edu/cgi-bin/unc_id/chpwqa.pl (You can also get to this page by going to the main Onyen page, clicking "Manage Password," then clicking "Challenge Response" at the top of the next two screens.)
-
Review the instructions on the page to set up a challenge response or reset your password.
-
Important: You can only use this service to reset your password if you have set up the questions in advance. Therefore it's adviseable to set the questions up when you know your password. If you haven't set up challenge response questions and you forget your password, you will have to go to the ITS help desk in the basement of the undergraduate library with your One Card or another photo ID to have your password reset.
For your Ruby account (SILS)
-
Log in to Ruby using the Secure Shell Client.
-
At the "$" prompt, type passwd and press Enter.
-
You will be prompted once to enter your old password, and then twice for your new password.
