 Forward Email to Another Address

If you have several e-mail accounts, you may wish to automatically forward messages from some accounts to a different account so that you can check all of your messages in one place.

Forwarding your Onyen e-mail to another account

  1. Go to the [ http://onyen.unc.edu/ ] Onyen page, scroll down, and click on the "Forward email" button.

  2. Enter your Onyen and password.

  3. You will see a screen where you can add e-mail addresses to which you would like your Onyen e-mail forwarded. If you like, you can also check the box to have a copy of the e-mails kept on the UNC mail server. Set these the way you want, then click Submit.

  4. If you want to add another e-mail address for forwarding, you can, or you can just close the browser.

Turning off your Onyen e-mail forwarding

  1. Go to the [ http://onyen.unc.edu/ ] Onyen page, scroll down, and click on the "Forward email" button.

  2. Enter your Onyen and password.

  3. You will see the forwarding that you have set up. Check the boxes next to the e-mail address(es) that you no longer want to forward mail to, and click Submit.

Forwarding your Ruby e-mail to another account

  1. Log in to Ruby, and at the prompt, type pico .forward Notice the period before the word forward. This will open the pico editor where you can enter your forwarding information.

  2. If you just want to forward your Ruby messages to another account without keeping a copy on Ruby, type the e-mail address to which you want your Ruby e-mail forwarded. For example, if you want to forward your Ruby e-mail to your Onyen account, type

    onyen@email.unc.edu

replacing "onyen" with your actual Onyen. If you want to forward to more than one e-mail address, separate them with commas.

  3. If you want to keep a copy of messages sent to your Ruby account while forwarding them elsewhere, first type a backslash followed by your Ruby e-mail address (with no space in between), then a comma, then the address(es) to which you want your Ruby mail forwarded. For example, if you wanted to forward your Ruby mail to a Yahoo! account and also leave a copy on Ruby, you would type

    \username@ils.unc.edu, yahooid@yahoo.com

replacing "username" with your Ruby login and "yahooid" with your Yahoo! ID.

  4. Type control-x to exit pico, saving the file you made as .forward (the default name).

  5. At the command prompt, type chmod 600 .forward to set appropriate permissions on the file.

Turning off your Ruby e-mail forwarding

  1. Log in to Ruby, and at the prompt, type rm -f .forward Notice the period before the word forward. This will remove the .forward file and stop the forwarding function.
