 Open a database account at SILS


MySQL Databases

Please note that this service is ONLY available to students enrolled in one of the programs at the School of Library and Information Science.

Send a message to the SILS Help Desk in the following format:

  • Subject line: MySQL Account Request

  • In the body of the email, include:

    • your first and last name

    • purpose (a short description why you need an account created)

    • a username

    • a password

    • a database name

    • the date that this account can be deleted ("never" is not acceptable)

Once the connection has been established, log in by typing the following at the command prompt on Ruby:

mysql -u yourusername -h pearl.ils.unc.edu -p databasename

Oracle Databases

Send a message to the SILS Help Desk in the following format:

  • Subject line: Oracle Account Request

  • In the body of the email, include:

    • your first and last name

    • purpose (a short description why you need an account created)

    • a username

    • a password

    • the date that this account can be deleted ("never" is not acceptable)

  • The connect string will be inls.

Resetting Your Database Account Password

To reset your password for your database account, send email to the SILS Help Desk with your request. Please include your onyen, PID, and the type of account (Oracle, MySQL, etc.) and your database name.
