Introduction
There are many programs and many different ways to capture video and successfully use it on your Web pages. Here is a (mostly) tried and (mostly) true method, using Adobe Premiere 6.0 and Cleaner 5 on PCs 46 and 47. You will first need to set and confirm a lot of settings. Many settings default correctly, but you will always want to check them, and will likely need to make a few changes. The actual video capture process doesn't have many steps, so think of this as a recipe that is easy to make, but that has a long list of ingredients.
Hardware
-
If you're using the digital camcorder:
-
Consider plugging the camera into the power strip underneath the desk, particularly if the camera's battery is running low.
-
Plug the firewire cable into the camera. If you are using the lab's Sony digital camcorder, lift up the DC In tab and the tab underneath it near the lens. The firewire plugs into the DV In/Out port. Make sure that the firewire cable is plugged in to the back of the CPU.
-
-
If you're using the VCR:
-
Confirm that the red cable leading from the Pinnacle Systems box is plugged into the Pinnacle card on the back of the CPU (next to where the firewire cable is plugged in.)
-
Turn on the TV and insert the tape.
-
The Pinnacle card (blue box) should look like this:
The back of the CPU should look like this:

Still on the Settings tab, select Edit in the Preferences area.
-
Under Scratch Disks and Device Control, make sure that all three scratch disks are set to path
E:- if any are not, pick Select Folder and set the scratch disk toE:. -

Capturing Your Video
-
If you're using the digital camcorder:
-
Cue up your tape, and select Play (the black triangle) and then select Record (the red circle) under the screen in the Movie Capture box.
-
You can play the tape until you get to the part you want to record, and then select Record.
-
To stop recording, select the Stop button or press ESC (the escape key).
-
-
If you're using the VCR:
-
Cue up your tape, and select the large Record bar under the screen in the Movie Capture box.
-
The Movie Capture box may not display video while it is capturing.
-
Stop recording by selecting ESC (the escape key).
-
-
Each time you stop recording, you will be prompted to save the clip. If you don't want to keep it, name it something like
Deleteso that you will remember which ones to delete later on. -
After you have captured all of your movie clips, minimize or close the Movie Capture box.
-
(If you want to preview a clip, select it in the Project box and select the Play button (black triangle) in the area above the clips).
-
Click and drag the first clip from the Project box to the Video 1A channel in the Timeline box. You can use the Timeline box to turn several clips into one clip.
Encoding Video for the Web
-
From the Start Menu choose → → .
-
In Premiere, go to → → . The Cleaner dialogue box will open.
-
Select Start.
-
Return to Cleaner by maximizing it from the taskbar.
Note:
Premiere will freeze at this point, and will not respond until you have exited from Cleaner. Do not try to use Premiere until you have exited from Cleaner).
-
In Cleaner, double-click on the movie clip in the Untitled Batch box.
-
The Project: Premiere window will open displaying the beginning of the clip and some buttons underneath. (There must be an image in this window. If the screen is black, skip to the troubleshooting section at the bottom of this page).
-
In the Settings area, select the Edit button. This is where the encoding takes place.
-
Choose WWW. Select Continue.
-
Choose your preferred format: Quicktime, Real Player, or Windows Media Player. Quicktime has the highest quality and largest files. Windows Media Player has smaller files and displays the video in a smaller window than Quicktime. Real Player produces medium file sizes, but displays in a window about the size of Quicktime. SILS does not have a streaming media server, so if you're planning to house your video on a SILS web page, choose non-streaming options.
-
Choose the rest of your settings by reading each option and deciding what would be best for your audience and your purpose. After choosing the last one, you will select the Finish button.
-
In the Untitled Batch window, select the Start button (gray triangle) to begin processing. You should be prompted to give a name to your file. (If you aren't, remember to go to the E: drive and rename it after it has finished encoding).
-
An Output window will open and show you the progress of encoding your video. Depending on the format, quality, and length of the video, this could take a number of minutes.
-
After the encoding has finished, if you want to encode another clip, close Cleaner and return to Premiere. Your clips will be saved in the E: drive.
Putting Clips on the Web
-
Put video on your Web page simply by linking to it rather than linking to an .html page.
-
You may want to offer several formats for your clip depending on who your audience is. Most users on our campus will have a broadband connection, but many people at home have at best a 56K connection. You may also want to encode for use in multiple media players.
-
If you have any trouble with any of the above steps, take a minute to locate where your .avi files are. These are the very large files that will be encoded in Cleaner. Your .avi files should be found in the E: directory.
-
If they are not there, check the following path:
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Premiere 6.0and move the files if they are there. -
It would be best for the .avi files to be on E: since E: is intended to house large files, and, ideally, both Premiere and Cleaner should look for .avi files there.
If you are seeing a black screen in your Project: Premiere window, try the following steps:
-
Delete any clips in the Untitled Batch window by selecting them and pressing the Delete key.
-
Go to → .
-
Choose your .avi file and select OK.
-
You should see your clip in the Project: Premiere window.
If your clip will not play in a media player after you've encoded it, check the file size by viewing the details. If the file size is 1K, you will need to encode the file again.
You may encounter additional problems depending on if you're using PC46 or PC47. You may be able to switch back and forth between Premiere and Cleaner on PC47, but not on PC46. Premiere freezing while Cleaner is open is an expected occurrence, and should not throw you off or prevent you from completing your tasks.
Final Words
-
This is an extremely abbreviated introduction. Both Premiere and Cleaner are very powerful programs. (Cleaner, for example, lets you strip out an audio track from a video clip and save it as an MP3).
