Set Up a Printer in the SILS Lab

There are two printers in the SILS Lab, one black-and-white and one color. The SILS Lab computers should have SILSQue1 on AUXPRINT2 set as the default black and white printer (this is the big laser printer on the lab attendant's desk).

**Please Note: to print to the Lab's black-and-white printer, you must [ http://sils.unc.edu/itrc/its/faq.php?id=4625 ] have money on your OneCard. Printing costs 5 cents per page.

To print black and white pages

  • SILSQue1 on AUXPRINT2 should be automatically selected as the default printer in the application print dialogue box. If it's not, select it from the dropdown menu

  • When you print from the lab computers to that printer, you'll get a popup box that asks you to enter your name and the name of your print job. It doesn't really matter what you enter here, it just needs to be something you can recognize.

  • Once you have sent the print job, go to the Pharos station next to the door of the Lab, swipe your OneCard, and choose the print job you want to release.

To print from the manual feed tray

  • Open the document to be printed and select FilePrint.

  • Select SILSQue1 on AUXPRINT2 and click Properties.

  • Under the Paper/Quality tab, in the Paper Options section, click the Source is: drop-down list.

  • Select Manual Feed (Tray 1)

  • Click OK

  • You will be prompted for your name and a name for the print job.

  • Open tray 1 and place your paper in the tray.

  • After supplying that information, swipe your OneCard at the machine near the lab door and select your print job(s).

  • At the printer, respond to prompts about paper size and type.

  • Hit the green button on the printer to begin printing.

To print color pages

  • Color printing is limited to no more than 5 pages. If you need more than 5 pages printed in color, please go to the [ http://www.printing.unc.edu/Copy_Centers/unccc.html ] Student Union Copy Center.

  • In the print dialogue box of the application your working in, select //pelican/Lab_Color from the printer dropdown menu.

    • Please note: You will not have to name your print job or swipe your card!

  • Your pages will go to the color printer next to the lab attendant. See the lab assistant to pick up the pages.

Adding a printer

If //pelican/Lab_Color is not set up on the computer you are working on or the SILS username you used to sign in, you can set it as a network printer.

  • Go to StartPrinters.

  • If you do not see Lab_Color on pelican, listed:

    • Select Add a Printer. This opens the Add Printer dialogue box.

    • Select Add a network, wireless, or Bluetooth printer.

    • Select The printer that I want isn't listed.

    • Select Select a shared printer by name, and type \\pelican\Lab_Color

    • Click Next.

    • Please uncheck the Set as the default printer box. Click Next and then Finish.
