Blackboard and FERPA: Information for Students
Students and other course participants are reminded that they are responsible for observing the confidentiality of student records as required by the [ http://regweb.unc.edu/official/FERPA/FERPA.html ] Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act and [ http://regweb.unc.edu/resources/ferpa.php ] University policies regarding the management of student data.
Students showing no email address on class rosters have requested that release of their University-registered email address be restricted (this is the email address normally listed in the online campus directory). In this case, in most places Blackboard will hide the student's email address while still allowing messages to be sent to the student through the Email tool in Blackboard. Instructors will still be able to see the email addresses for all students (even those who have requested that this information be restricted).
While the University respects the requests of those students who have opted to have the release of their information restricted, there are currently some inconsistencies in the [ http://help.unc.edu/?id=5473 ] Discussion Board that allow for all student email addresses, including those of students who have requested that this information be restricted, to be shown.
Instructions for suppressing your email address in discussion forum postings
Students with restrictions on their information who do not want their email address to be available on the discussion forum must follow these steps before posting to a discussion forum:
-
On the Bb Desktop, click Personal Information on the Tools menu.
-
Select Edit Personal Information .
-
On the Edit Personal Information page, change your email address to
<privacy@unc.edu>. -
Press Submit .
Be sure to change your address back to your university-registered email address after you've posted any messages. Until you make this change, your instructors cannot email you from Blackboard. Remember, you are responsible for course email, regardless of any restrictions you may place on your student record.
