Wired and/or Wireless Networking is available in all the on-campus residential halls and most, if not all, offices and classrooms. In order to access the network with your computer or other device, you will need to have the network card registered and configured to communicate with our DHCP server. This server will grant you access to the network via the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP).
Network cards can be either wired or wireless . A wired network card requires an RJ-45 Ethernet cable, which looks very similar, but larger, than a phone cable. A wireless network card can either be integrated or inserted into a laptop's PCMCIA slot. Also, it requires you to be within range of a Wireless Access Point. See our document on [ http://help.unc.edu/?id=849 ] Wireless Access Point Locations for more details.
The latest CCI machines come with both a wireless and wired network adapter built into the computer. If your computer or device did not come with a network card you will need to [ http://help.unc.edu/?id=1759 ] purchase one before proceeding with these instructions.
Instructions for getting connected will depend on the type of Operating System installed on your computer or the type of device (Xbox, Palm, Pocket PC, etc.) you are using. Our documentation will walk you through the following steps, all of which are required for you to get connected:
-
Register your network card's adapter (MAC address).
-
Configure your card to communicate with our campus DHCP server.
-
For wireless cards, determine what system or software you are using and finding a wireless zone.
-
Configure the wireless card's SSID and WEP Key to access our more secured wireless network.
-
Finally, once you are connected to the Internet, make sure that you are using the latest version of [ https://shareware.unc.edu/ ] Symantec AntiVirus. Also, use Internet Explorer and visit [ http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com ] Windows Update to ensure that your system patches are up-to-date. This is necessary and required in order to use our network. (Note: computers without the necessary patches and protection will be removed from our network in order to protect other users).
