Connecting to the UNC Network - Step 1: Win 2000 Registration

Note:

If you are using another Operating System other than Windows 2000, then see the document [ http://help.unc.edu/?id=4924 ] Connecting to the UNC Network - Getting Started to select your Operating System or device. Also, if you purchased your card separately, then it must first be installed. Please install the card(s) according to the manufacturer's instructions, and return to this document.

Getting connected to the UNC-Chapel Hill network involves two steps: registering your network card(s) and configuring your computer for the network. If you purchased a CCI computer and attended the training session at CTOPS, then your computer should be pre-registered, pre-configured and ready to use.

Registering your card(s) on the UNC-Chapel Hill Network helps us ensure network security and keeps anyone not affiliated with the University from using our network.

Obtaining your Network Card's Hardware Address

  1. On your computer, click StartRun.

    Windows 2000 Start Menu
  2. Next, type cmd and click the OK button.

    The Run command window
  3. In the screen that appears, type ipconfig /all and press Enter.

    Command Prompt box
  4. You will see the Windows 2000 IP Configuration information. Your screen will be similar to this, but your numbers will be different.

    Windows 2000 IP Configuration information
  5. Write down the Physical Address from the Ethernet Adapter section (and/or Wireless Adapter section) exactly as it appears. In this example, 00-06-29-95-5B-3E is the physical address, which is also your network card's hardware address.

Caution:

If your number begins with 44- or 45-, you are looking at the wrong number. This is your dial-up Modem Adapter Address which will not work!

 Troubleshooting

If the network card is not listed in the IP Configuration screen, try the following:

  1. Make sure the card is completely inserted in its slot inside the computer. It may help to remove the card and then reinsert.

  2. Uninstall the drivers, by right-clicking on My ComputerPropertiesDevice Manager. Then right-click the Ethernet Card or Wireless Card option and choose Uninstall . When this is complete and after rebooting, reinstall the card according to the instructions from the manufacturer.

  3. If you are still having problems, contact us via one of the [ http://help.unc.edu/?id=3663 ] Other ITS Help Options.
