Connecting to the UNC Network - Step 1 and 2: Game System Registration and Configuration

 Introduction

Note:

The following information is provided for your convenience. ITS does not provide support for Game Systems on or off the campus network.

Many Gaming Systems, like the Microsoft Xbox, Sony Play Station 2 and Nintendo GameCube, come equipped with network adapters allowing Online Gaming. Connecting your Game System to the UNC-Chapel Hill network involves two steps:

  1. Registering your network card(s)

  2. Configuring your system for the network DHCP Server

If you experience problems with any of the following instructions, you should contact the Game System Manufacturer (Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, etc.).

Obtaining Your Network Card's Hardware Address

To register your network card, you will need to obtain the network card's hardware address (also known as the MAC address). Depending on the device, there are different ways of finding this. Usually the Game Device or Network Adapter will have a MAC address printed on a small sticker. The MAC address will be twelve characters comprised of the numbers 0 - 9 and the letters A - F. The MAC will always start with 00- , for example: 00-60-97-8E-1D-B9 .

If you find the MAC address sticker, write down the address to use later when registering. If you can not find your MAC address, then configure your machine via the instructions below, which will ultimately lead you to the MAC address.

 Game System Configuration
