Getting connected to the UNC-Chapel Hill network involves two actions: registering your network card(s) and configuring your computer for the network. If you purchased a CCI computer and attended the training session at CTOPS then your computer should be pre-configured and ready to plug in without following these steps.
Before you can register and configure your network card(s), it must be installed. Please install your network card(s) according to the manufacturer's instructions and return to this document. If you have purchased a CCI computer, your network card(s) are already installed, and you should skip to step number six.

If you are asked to Pick a Category , then click Network and Internet Connections .

Double-click the Network Connections icon.

To set up the Wired connection, double-click the Local Area connection icon and choose Properties .
Your Network window will look similar to the example, though your Connect using: information may be different.

Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click on Properties .

Make sure the following options are selected:
Obtain an IP address automaticallyandObtain DNS server address automatically. Be sure to click the OK button after you finish.

Close all open windows so that you can see the desktop of your computer. Right click on My Computer and choose Properties .

Click on the Start Menu. Right click on My Computer , and choose Properties .

Click the tab labeled Computer Name . Click Change... .

Select the Computer Name field, and type your [ https://onyen.unc.edu: ] Onyen. Next select the Workgroup button and enter the name of your residence hall in the text box. If your residence hall name is more than one word, type an underscore (shift + hyphen) instead of a space. (ie. HINTON_JAMES). If you live off-campus or if this is your office computer, simply put UNC .
Note
Departmental computers may be part of a Domain, as opposed to a Workgroup. If your computer is in a Domain, do not change any of these settings.

When you receive a welcome message to your workgroup, click OK and restart your computer.
