How do I give a student from another institution access to a Blackboard site?
The student is or will be officially registered for the course.
When interinstitutional students enroll in their first UNC-CH course, they are automatically assigned a PID, which is the necessary prerequisite for getting an Onyen account. Students can create Onyen accounts online at http://onyen.unc.edu. Once the Onyen is created and before the user can log into https://blackboard.unc.edu, the user will have to wait for the Onyen to enter the Blackboard system (please see How often is user account information updated in Blackboard? for timing information) . So, aside from directing these students to get Onyens and to wait until their Onyens enter the Blackboard system, there isn't anything else that you'll need to do.
You can check the list of course users in your course site's Control Panel to see if a student's Onyen account has been added to the system:
1. Go to the site's Control Panel.
2. Click List/Modify Users.
3. Search for the student by last name (do not include his or her first name). Notice what is listed for the student's username. If it's the student's PID + "has.no.onyen", the student either hasn't created an Onyen yet or that data hasn't been added to the Blackboard system yet. Please check with the student to confirm if the Onyen was created and when. If the username looks like an Onyen -this is, has less than 9 characters, the student should now be able to use that username and associated password to access Blackboard and your course site.
The student will not be officially registered for the course.
Check with the student to see if he or she has an Onyen account:
- If the student has been officially registered in a UNC-CH course before and that course used Blackboard, he or she may have an Onyen account. If the student does have an Onyen, you can enroll him or her as you would an auditor who is a UNC-CH student.
- If the student doesn't have an Onyen, then create a non-Onyen Blackboard user account for him or her.
