 Using Remote Desktop

The Remote Desktop feature in Windows Vista allows SILS faculty and staff to connect to their office desktops remotely, enabling them to use all their computer resources from off campus.

You need three things to use Remote Desktop:

  • Windows Vista on your office computer

  • Windows 95 or more recent version of Windows on your remote (or home) computer

  • An Internet connection

Here's how it works:

  1. Enable the Remote Desktop feature on your office computer. You must be logged in with administrative access to do this.

    1. Go to the Control Panel and open the System folder.

      Control Panel System Page

    2. Go to the Remote Settings section and select "Allow Remote Assistance connections to this computer."

Remote tab of System Properties box

    3. Select "Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop" and Select Users.... Ensure your username is on the list. If not, Add it.

      Remote Users box

    4. Leave your computer running and connected to the network with Internet access. Lock your computer.

  2. Install software for the Remote Desktop connection on your remote (or home) computer. The software is installed by default on computers using Windows XP and Vista, so you only need to do this step if you are running a different version of Windows.

  3. You must first establish a [ http://sils.unc.edu/itrc/its/faq.php?id=4626 ] VPN connection from your remote computer to the SILS network.

  4. Now you are ready to set up a remote desktop connection.

    1. On your remote computer, open Remote Desktop Connection (go to StartProgramsAccessories, and point to Communications and then Remote Desktop Connection).

      Remote Desktop Connection box

    2. In Computer, type the name of your office computer or its IP address.

    3. Click Connect. The Log On to Windows dialog box appears.

    4. In the Log On to Windows box, type in your user name, password and domain (ils.unc.edu), and then click OK. A window will open, and you will be able to view your office desktop remotely. Your office computer will remain locked.

  5. End your session

    1. In your Remote Desktop Connection window, click Start and Shut Down.

    2. In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, select Log Off, and then click OK.
