Library Staff uses the IM program GAIM, which is multi-protocol, just like Trillian.

I don't use IM. How do I get started?

[ http://www.aim.com/get_aim/win/latest_win.adp?aolp= ] Download AIM here. Fill out a quick, easy Web form, choose a screen name, and start using IM in 1-2 minutes.

I have IM. How do I IM a librarian?

Open a new message, enter our buddy name, davisrefdesk, in the To: field, and start typing your message. Or, just add davisrefdesk to your buddy list, double-click on the buddy name to open an IM window, then type your message.

 
 5.

Restrictions on your computer, or don't want to download AIM?

Use another version of AIM called [ http://www.aim.com/get_aim/express/aim_expr.adp?aolp= ] AIM Express. With AIM Express, you can create a screen name and chat directly from the Web. No downloads and no software installations. If you do not wish to create a screen name, you can still use the [ http://www.lib.unc.edu/livehelp ] Live Online Help service at the Davis Library Reference Desk.

 
 6.

Will there be a wait?

IM questions are taken in a first-come-first-served order. Alternatively, you are welcome to email a librarian, call the Reference Desk at 962-1151, or visit ([ http://www.lib.unc.edu/directions.html ] Directions) for assistance.
