Blackboard Issues: Resolved, Ongoing, and New

Overview

This frequently-updated document includes a section for each Blackboard feature, describing any resolved, ongoing, and problems ITS has identified in Blackboard.unc.edu's current version of the software, 6.2.3.23.

Bb Desktop-->My Courses

  • Those with the course roles of Teaching Assistant, Grader, and Builder are now able to suppress the display of information in their list of courses.

New infelicity

When editing your list of courses, you must also clear Display Announcements for the course links you wish to remove, or multiple "No Announcements" messages will appear under the course links that remain in the list.

Announcements

  • Announcements set to "always display" now continue to display in individuals' My Courses lists.

Content Areas

Update: Problem resolved Aug 12, 2005

Send Email

Discontinued feature

Logs recording header information for email messages are no longer generated by the software.

  • ITS has changed its procedure for handling email data updates: changes made manually in the Blackboard system are overwritten by daily data updates from the Online Campus Directory. As a result, fewer invalid e-mail addresses exist in the system.

Gradebook

New problem

In a gradebook item's Options page, the options for Assessment Attempt Details and Download Results are listed multiple times. ITS has submitted a problem report about this issue to the Blackboard company.

Continuing problem

In order for Total Points and Total Weighted Percentages to be calculated correctly, gradebook items with letter grades must be set to have a Points Possible value of 100 before any letter grades are entered or uploaded into the Gradebook.

  • In Mozilla, all of the toolbar options will on the first screen, requiring no horizontal scrolling.

  • Individuals can now successfully clear test and survey attempts using the http://blackboard.unc.edu address.

  • Individuals can now manually edit scores for individual test questions successfully using the http://blackboard.unc.edu address.

  • Default letter-to-score conversion settings can now be customized.

Tests, Surveys, and Pools

  • Intermittent system errors that prevented individuals from adding, modifying, or deleting questions from tests and surveys have been corrected.

  • The Display Until option is no longer automatically checked in the Test/Survey Options window.

Course Copy

  • Staff Information copies.

  • The individual copying the course receives an email message notifying him or her when the copy process has completed.

Archive Course

  • When this feature stopped working last year, ITS removed this option from the Control Panel. ITS' testing with the new version has been successfully; consequently, this option has been made available once more.

Create User, Batch Enroll Users

Update: problem resolved; features re-enabled on Aug 14, 2005

ITS temporarily removed these options from the Control Panel until the Blackboard company has completed upgrading the customizations that Blackboard.unc.edu has had in place for the past several years. The necessary update to this feature has been made, and these features were re-enabled on Friday, August 14.

Course Statistics

  • In Fall 2004, the Blackboard application servers crashed repeatedly, and the problem was traced to the the accretion of Course Statistics data on our system. At that time, with the Blackboard company's assistance, it was determined that the safest method of preventing these performance problems was to store statistics for only 30-day periods. Until ITS can determine that a greater number of days' statistics can be stored during the active Fall and Spring semesters, ITS will continue to purge Course Statistics data on a published schedule. Instructors and course administrators wishing to save this data will need to download their sites' statistics before these scheduled purges. Information about this schedule will posted to the Blackboard login page.
