Iron Mountain - PC Backup Software
Terms
UNC-CH has entered into an agreement with Iron Mountain to provide a remote backup solution using their Connected PC Backup software. UNC-CH has agreed to purchase a minimum of 2500 licenses for Windows based machines for all UNC affiliates.
Price/License
Any current UNC affiliate (faculty, staff, students, retirees, etc.) may purchase a yearly Iron Mountain license, using their UNC One Card Expense Plan and active Onyen account, for use on their personal computer(s). Departmental bulk orders must be paid by departments using an FRS account.
- Individual personal licenses: $120 for one full year of service
- Departmental license per machine per fiscal year: $108 or prorated depending on order date
Note we ONLY accept the UNC One Card for purchasing Iron Mountain, but you can add funds to your One Card using many other payment methods. See the One Card site for information on how to add funds to your account. For personal licenses, if your affiliation ends before your license expires, there will be no interruption to your service unless your Onyen account is set as Inactive. This is typically an automated process and occurs sometime around 6 months after you leave. Only in this situation, can you request a prorated refund for the remainder of the service.
Software
The Iron Mountain service provides an online backup and recovery solution for all your critical data, no matter where it's located on your PC. Your entire hard drive is backed up using this software, which allows us to recover a backed up computer even if the hard drive is replaced or if the computer was stolen. Iron Mountain ensures your backups happen automatically, consistently, and securely.
- Connected BackupPC happens in the background, with minimal user intervention and without getting in the way of business.
- SendOnce technology allows fast backups by only copying user's unique data and cataloging data files that are already in the Iron Mountain SendOnce data pool. Please note that the first backup should be done on UNC's high speed wired network and takes an average of 2 hours to complete. Initial off-campus backups can take significantly longer due to the upload limits imposed by ISPs. Following backups will only take an average of 2 minutes.
- Access your backed-up data for recovery or management any time via the Account Management website.
- Recovery is fast and easy - simply use the software installed on your computer to restore files. Or, log into the Account Management website from any computer and recover individual files in minutes.
- Your data is encrypted and securely stored in Iron Mountain's data vaults in redundant remote locations. Iron Mountain also backs up our vaults to tape, so your data is off-line, protected from viruses and worms.

Placing an order
- Personal Licenses
Customers who wish to protect their own personal computers with Iron Mountain should visit our Ordering site to place their order. You should have at least $120 on your UNC OneCard expense plan to purchase the license. If you bring your computer to the ITS Response Center we will install the software for you. You can even leave it with us to have the first backup performed. This is highly recommended for off-campus customers or those with no wired high-speed connection to the Internet.
Customers may also add a year license for Iron Mountain as an option when purchasing a CCI computer. After purchasing the laptop we will contact the customer with information on how to get started using the service. The benefit to ordering this way is that it allows you to use any payment method accepted by the RAM Shop.
- Departmental Bulk Orders
This option is intended for Departmental Business Managers or those with approval from their business office. We recommend that customers contact their departmental IT support before placing an order. Your department may already have an IM community setup and configured.
