Overview
This document is intended for Iron Mountain departmental customers who have already purchased the software and it is specifically designed for version 7.x of the software. Departments will be upgraded to the 8.x version during the 2007 Spring semester. We highly recommend that you read this information before using the software. If after reading this document, you do not feel comfortable with the configuration or setup, contact your departmental IT support or the [ https://www.unc.edu/ar-bin/websub/index.pl?page=main&def1=Iron%20Mountain%20Support ] ITS Response Center .
See our [ http://help.unc.edu/?id=5662 ] Iron Mountain - PC Backup Software document for ordering information. If you purchased an individual personal license or you have already been upgraded to version 8.x, see our [ http://help.unc.edu/?id=6063 ] Iron Mountain - Software version 8.x - Installation and Getting Started document.
Installation
The Iron Mountain software agent will most likely be installed by your departmental IT support or by the ITS Response Center (in-person or via Desktop Streaming). Due to licensing restrictions we are unable to give the executable to individual customers. It is highly recommended that you do not keep copies of the installer. Each time you download the installer from the Iron Mountain server, it dynamically generates a file with the latest settings, including server IP addresses. If you use an old copy of the installer, it may fail to work.
Configuration
During the installation of the software, options are available to configure the software for your computer. All of these settings can be changed at any time after installation by opening the Iron Mountain agent and choose the Options menu. The following sections will give you more details about each set of options:
Backup Schedule
It is highly recommended that you perform your first backup while you are connected to the main UNC wired network. The first backup can take anywhere from 1-4 hours because the software must catalog your entire harddrive, compress and encrypt your unique data and send it to the off-site Iron Mountain server. Using high-speed ISPs, including Road Runner, may take in excess of 24 hours, due to the upload limit imposed by ISPs. Subsequent backups should take ~2 minutes and can even be done over a modem connection.
Because the agent uses very little resources on following backups, you can have them scheduled to run during any time frame. Most customers prefer to have them run while they are not at the computer, such as after 5pm or during lunch. This is a personal preference, but it is very important that you schedule this at a time when your computer will be turned on and connected to the Internet. Note: If your backups are not happening due to scheduling issues and/or you constantly cancel the backups, you will not be able to restore any new data.
Connection and Firewall
If your computer is always connected to the UNC wired network, then the default settings should work fine for you. If you use a different means of connection, such as a dialup modem, it will need to be chosen here. If your department's or your home network is behind a firewall, then you may need to configure the Firewall tab. Contact your departmental IT support for more assistance with that configuration.
Name & Address
If your contact information changes, it can be updated in this section. The UNC Registration Code, should not be changed. If you do so, it will cause your account to be put on hold and potentially cancelled. As you can see, some fields may have been locked by your department's Iron Mountain admins. If that information is incorrect, please let them know so they can update your agent.
Security
By default your account has a pre-assigned Encryption Key, which can not be changed. This key can be disclosed here and is required if you move your account to a new computer or if you use the [ http://software.unc.edu/IM/manage/ ] Account Management site to retrieve a file. You have the option of creating a password of your own, which will be much easier to remember. If you need to restore a file using the iRoam web-based site, you will need either your Account # or email address and your Encryption Key or password.
Note
In version 8 of this software, Encryption keys will be hidden to both end users and technicians. The "key" for accounts will then be the password. To prepare for this change, all end users should set a password on their account.
Email Access
This feature is currently not supported by ITS, although your department may utilize this feature. The main campus mail system stores email on the server and is backed up nightly and we do not recommend local mail stores in most cases.
