As weblogs have become more popular, a number of weblogging services have made themselves available to host personal weblogs free of charge. These include sites like Blogger, LiveJournal and Xanga. Because UNC does not offer a weblogging service, professional services like the ones listed above prove to be the best solution for weblogs. These professional services design their sites and monitor them to prevent abuse from automated programs posting spam in the form of advertisements to weblogs and other malicious activities that the weblogs were not designed or intended for. Below are a couple recommendations for implementing a blog should you choose to have it hosted on your UNC website.
-
Create a static html webpage to serve as a personal weblog.
This is a simple method of creating a weblog that requires creating a dedicated webpage to serve as your weblog. Simply create an html webpage and save it in your public_html folder with the name of the page you want for your blog. For example: if your blog was to be located at http://www.unc.edu/~onyen/blog.html you would want to name the page you create blog.html. After creating this page you can update the html file with your latest entries as often as you like.
Note
See [ http://help.unc.edu/?id=779 ] How do I set up my personal web page and where can I find help on creating it? for more information on creating and posting a webpage to UNC web space.

[ http://www.blogger.com/ ] Blogger provides users a simple solution to host their weblog on their own webpage. By using Blogger to post your weblog to your personal UNC website, you will be able to post, and have others post, to your blog just as if it were on Blogger's own website, but have the blog located on your current personal website.
Once you have created an account and blog on Blogger's site, go to the Publishing tab of the settings page. From there you need to appropriately configure the settings to post to your personal UNC webpage. Typical settings would be as follows:
-
server:
isis.unc.edu -
url:
www.unc.edu/~youronyen/optionalblogdirectory/ -
path:
/afs/isis.unc.edu/y/o/youronyen/public_html/optionalblogdirectory/Note
In the place of
yando, substitute the first and second letters of your onyen. -
filename:
filename.html -
ftp username:
youronyen -
ftp password:
onyen password
It is recommended that you use sFTP rather than FTP to publish but either method will work. Remember that the ftp password will need to be changed when you change your onyen password. For more information on posting blogs to your personal website using Blogger, please see the Blogger help pages at www.blogger.com.
