Using the UNC-CH Spam Filtering Service with Client-Side Filtering
Introduction
This document provides basic instructions for doing some client-side filtering when you have selected use the Tag-Only mode of the UNC-CH Spam Filtering System instead of having the system trap/reject the spam.
Mozilla Mail, Netscape 7.x Mail, Thunderbird
1. Open the mail client and log in.
2. Choose Message Filters from the Tools menu
3. In the Message Filters window that appears, make sure that your UNC email account is selected in the drop-down menu, and click on New...
4. In the Filter Rules window that appears, give the filter a name. e.g. spam
5. Select the radio button for Match any of the following.
6. Make sure the first drop-down menu reads Subject and that the second one reads contains.
7. In the text box next to the drop-down lists, enter [Spam:
8. Under Perform this action: make sure that Move to folder is selected in the first drop-down.
9. Click the second drop-down to choose the folder you would like potential spam maillings to be moved to.
10. Click OK.
Outlook XP/2003
1. Open Outlook and log in.
2. From the menu, choose .
3. In the Rules Wizard window that appears, make sure that Inbox is chosen for Apply changes to this folder:
4. Click New to create a new rule.
5. Choose the Start from a blank rule radio button.
6. Choose Check messages when they arrive from the upper-most box, and click Next.
7. In the next screen, under Which condition(s) do you want to check?, place a check next to with specific words in the subject.
8. In the lower-most box, click on specific words.
9. Enter [Spam: in the field for Specify words or phrases to search for in the subject:, and click Add.
10. Click OK, then click Next.
11. In the next screen, under What do you want to do with the message?, place a check next to move it to the specified folder.
12. In the lower-most box, click on specified.
13. Choose the folder under your Inbox that you would like potential spam mailings to be moved to.
14. Click Next, and click Next again on the Add any exceptions screen.
15. Give the rule a name. e.g. spam.
16. Click Finish.
Pine
1. From the Pine Main Menu, type S for setup, R for rules, then F for filters.
2. Enter A to add a new rule.
3. Set the first field, Nickname, to something to help you identify the rule in the future. e.g. spam
4. Modify the Subject pattern field, and give it the value [Spam:
5. Locate the Message is New field, and set it to Yes.
6. Locate the Filter Action field, and set it to Move.
7. Choose the Folder List setting on the line below, and enter the name of the folder that you would like potential spam mailings to be moved to. Remember that folder names are case sensitive. You also have the option of pressing ctrl + t to choose the folder from a list.
8. Type E to exit the rule editor and Y to save your changes, and E and Y again to exit the Pine setup.
Mulberry
1. Open Mulberry and log in.
2. From the menu, choose
3. In the Rules window that appears, choose the Local tab, and click the button labeled Rule.
4. Give the rule a name. e.g. spam.
5. For the Triggered by: field, select All incoming mail, to put a check beside it.
6. Under Find Messages whose, set the drop down list to read Subject Contains [Spam:
7. Under Actions, set the drop down list to read Move Message to, and click the arrow to choose the folder that you would like potential spam mailings to be moved to.
8. Click the More Actions button.
9. Change the drop down below Move Message to Expunge Messsage.
10. Click OK.
