Installing ArcGIS 9.x Desktop

Handling previous versions

If you have an older version of ArcGIS installed on your computer, you will need to remove this and any associated ArcGIS software. Uninstall ArcGIS 9.0 Desktop, ArcGIS ArcInfo Workstation 9.0, and the ESRI Software Documentation Library, if they are listed. If you have any additional extensions for ArcGIS, uninstall these as well. You do not have to uninstall the ArcGIS 9.0 License Manager.

If you were using ArcGIS 9.0 with a license manager, you do not need a new hardware key or new keycodes to use version 9.1. Only 9.1 Network Analyst and Schematics extensions require new keycodes. If you are upgrading from ArcGIS 8.3, you will need new keycodes.

Note

You do not have to uninstall ArcView 3.x to install and run ArcGIS Desktop 9.1. ArcGIS 9.1 Desktop defaults to a different folder and will not conflict with ArcView 3.x.

Instructions

To install ArcGIS Desktop on your computer, follow these instructions:

Note

If you are running ArcGIS from a laptop or any computer not on the UNC network, you will need to install a [ http://software.unc.edu/hardwarekey.html ] hardware dongle and License Manager. Before continuing with these instructions, see the Knowledge Base document [ https://help.unc.edu/?id=5799 ] Installing the ArcGIS 9.x License Manager.

  1. Insert the CD labeled ArcGIS 9.1 into your CD drive.

  2. Click the Install ArcGIS Desktop link. The ArcGIS Setup window will appear. Click Next.

  3. Choose to accept the license agreement, and then click Next.

  4. Complete one (but not both) of the following steps:

    • If you have the License Manager installed on your computer, select Use License Manager on yourcomputername, and then click Next.

    • If you are using the [ http://its.unc.edu/gis/arcgis/FAQ/license.html ] ITS License Server, select Browse for a License Manager on the network and click Next. In the License Manager text window, type license0.isis.unc.edu , and then click Next.

  5. Select the product level for the ArcGIS product license you have (ArcView or ArcInfo), and then click Next.

  6. Select Complete as the installation type, and then click Next. (If you select Typical for the install, some of the ArcGIS extensions will not be installed.)

  7. Keep the default destination folder and click Next twice. Installation will begin. It may take 10-20 minutes.

    Note

If you don't already have it on your computer, you may be prompted to install Python. Accept the default installation folder for Python and click Next twice. Python and ArcGIS will both install at the same time. This may take 20 minutes.

  8. Click Finish. Unselect the options for installing additional data or extensions. (This requires additional downloads from IUware that you can do later.) Click OK.

  9. An Installer Information window will ask you to restart your computer to complete the installation. Close all open applications, and then click Yes.

  10. To confirm the installation was successful, from the Start menu, open ArcGIS. Try to open ArcMap or ArcCatalog.

After installing ArcGIS Desktop, you should download and install the latest patches or service packs for ESRI software from the following page:
