The Newsgroups service is provided by UNC-Chapel Hill at
news.unc.edu which can be accessed both on and off campus. A newsgroup is an e-mail-based service that allows you to send and read messages to e-mail lists about specific topics. Newsgroups provide an online forum for countless topics. Rather than having messages sent to your e-mail address, messages are sent to an intermediary computer that stores them and allows you to access them.
