Where can I find campus information about Windows Vista?

 Introduction

This article provides a list of the various resources campus IT staff are putting together for the release of Windows Vista. This is a work in progress, so check back frequently for updates.

Caution

At this time ITS is not recommending that faculty, staff or students install the Microsoft Vista operating system on a primary-use computer, or a computer used for a production IT system. There are a number of applications used on campus that currently will not run under Vista, and we other testing for other incompatibilities that may adversely affect campus users.

If you would like to become familiar with Vista, we recommend you install it on a secondary computer that is not needed for on-going work, and that you backup any important data on any computer you are using, regardless of the operating system.

We will update our recommendations as they change.

 Vista computer-based training (CBT) course

Some of you might be interested in a new computer-based training (CBT) course on the features of MS Vista. Here are the objectives of the course:

In this course, you will explore the new user interface components of Windows Vista and use the new and enhanced search functionality to search for files and folders. You will use the new tools and features provided in Windows Vista to organize your work, share through network, and collaborate in real-time. You will then optimize your system's performance using the new technologies available in Windows Vista. Finally, you will enhance the system security using the new security features and enhanced backup options.

If you're already subscribed to the CBT service, log in as usual. At the top of the resulting screen, type "vista" in the box next to the Search button. One self-paced course will be retrieved.

If you're not already subscribed to the CBT service, point your browser to http://cbt.unc.edu and follow the steps to get started with CBT.
