Introduction
This document will assist in uninstalling and installing Symantec Antivirus (aka Symantec Endpoint Protection) for Windows.
Do I Need to Upgrade?
Checking Your Symantec Antivirus Version

To check your current version of Symantec Antivirus, double-click on the gold shield located in the system tray (the right bottom corner of your screen).
If your computer is running Symantec Antivirus, click on the Program Versions section of the window. The number beside Program is the version of Symantec Antivirus that is currently installed.
If your computer is running Symantec Endpoint Protection, click on Help and Support button in the upper right corner of the window. The number beside Version is the version of Symantec Antivirus that is currently installed.


Checking Your Microsoft Windows Version
If you are unsure if you are running 32-bit or 64-bit Windows, go to Computer [aka My Computer], right click and select Properties. A window will appear displaying the version of Windows, available physical memory, and other information. Locate the System type information to determine if you are running a 32 or 64-bit version of Windows.

Uninstalling Symantec Antivirus
Please follow the directions below to uninstall Symantec Antivirus.
1. Close any software that is currently running.
2. Go to Start > Control Panel if you are using the standard XP theme, or Start > Settings > Control Panel if you are using the XP "Classic" screen theme.
3. Double-click on Programs and Features (aka Add/Remove Programs)
4. Scroll down the list of applications and select the installed version of Symantec Antivirus (aka Symantec Endpoint Protection). Click once on the Remove option, and then agree through the dialogue box(es) to begin the uninstall process.

5. Once the software has been removed, restart your computer.
Installing Symantec Endpoint Protection
Please follow the directions below to install Symantec Endpoint Protection.
1. Go to shareware.unc.edu and select "Symantec Endpoint Protection (Windows Managed Client)."
2. From the drop-down menu, select the version that corresponds to your campus affiliation and usage then click Download.

3. Select the type of OS (32 or 64-bit) you have from the drop down menu. If you are unsure of this information, please see the section above entitled, “Checking Your Microsoft Windows Version.” If you agree with the UNC Symantec Antivirus Distribution Agreement, click I Agree to download the client to your computer.
4. When the download window appears, note the name of the .exe file, and save the file to your desired location. Close your browser and double-click on the .exe installer file (in the location that is was saved) to start the installation process.
5. Choose to do a installation and then complete steps as the installer prompts you. The process is intended to be fully automatic. You will be prompted to restart your computer to complete the installation.

Running LiveUpdate
1. Once the installation is complete and your computer has restarted, click on the gold shield in the system tray (in the right bottom corner of your screen) to open Symantec Endpoint Protection.

2. Click once on LiveUpdate to open the Live Update window. 

3. Click Start if LiveUpdate does not begin updating automatically. Once LiveUpdate has finished downloading and applying the most current definitions, click the Close button. Symantec Endpoint Protection is now up to date.
