Upgrading Symantec Antivirus


 Introduction

Note

The following instructions are only for Windows-based computers with 32-bit operating systems (which covers the typical laptop and desktop machine, including the CCI computers). Please contact the Software Acquisition Office via software@unc.edu for assistance with Windows 64-bit, Linux and Novell Netware upgrades. There is a Norton Antivirus client for Macintosh listed under the "N" section of software on [ http://shareware.unc.edu ] shareware.unc.edu.

This document will assist in uninstalling and installing Symantec Antivirus that is available through the UNC Shareware site.

 Do I Need to Upgrade?

If you are running:

  • Windows 9x, ME, or NT and your version of Symantec Antivirus is NOT 9.0.6.1100 or

  • Windows 2000, XP, or 2003 and your version of Symantec Antivirus is NOT 10.1.6.6010 or

  • Windows Vista and your version of Symantec Antivirus is NOT 10.2.0.322

then you need to uninstall Symantec Antivirus and download and install the newest version from http://shareware.unc.edu. If you are not familiar with this process, please continue reading this document which will walk you through the identification, uninstall, and installation process.

 Checking Your Symantec Antivirus Version

To check your current version of Symantec Antivirus: Double-click on the gold shield

located in the system tray in the right bottom corner of your screen. Alternatively, you can go to StartAll ProgramsSymantec Client SecuritySymantec Antivirus to open Symantec Antivirus.

In the Program Versions section of the window, circled in red below, the number beside Program is the version of Symantec Antivirus that is currently installed.

Note

If a parent server , circled in yellow, is listed but does not include "ITS" in the name, please check with your departmental technical support--they may be managing your client with their parent servers so you will need to follow their instructions to upgrade.

 Checking Your Microsoft Windows Version

Currently, there are multiple versions of Symantec Antivirus available for download at http://shareware.unc.edu for specific versions of Microsoft Windows. If you are unsure about what version of Windows you are using, go to StartRun and type winver and click OK. A window will appear displaying the version of Windows, available physical memory, and other information:

If you are running:

  • Windows 9x, ME, or NT and your version of Symantec Antivirus is NOT 9.0.6.1100 or

  • Windows 2000, XP, or 2003 and your version of Symantec Antivirus is NOT 10.1.6.6010 or

  • Windows Vista and your version of Symantec Antivirus is NOT 10.2.0.322

 Uninstalling Symantec Antivirus

Please follow the directions below to uninstall Symantec Antivirus.

  1. Close any software that is currently running.

  2. Go to StartControl Panel if you are using the standard XP theme, or StartSettingsControl Panel if you are using the XP "Classic" screen theme.

  3. Double-click on Add/Remove Programs

  4. Scroll down the list of applications and click once on Symantec Antivirus then click once on the Remove option, and then Yes in the next dialogue box to begin the uninstall process.

  5. Once the software has been removed, restart your computer.

 Installing Symantec Antivirus

Please follow the directions below to install Symantec Antivirus.

  1. Go to [ http://shareware.unc.edu ] shareware.unc.edu and in the News box on the left of the screen click once on the Download link for "Symantec Antivirus Managed Client for Windows."

  2. In the next screen locate the Symantec information box. Select the version that corresponds to the version of Microsoft Windows you are using, and click Download button.

  3. If you agree with the [ https://shareware.unc.edu/savagree.html ] UNC Symantec Antivirus Distribution Agreement, click I Agree to download the client to your desktop.

    Note

    When downloading the software, it is normal to be prompted for your Onyen and password.

  4. When the download window appears, note the name of the .exe file, choose Save and save the file to your desktop. Now close your browser and double-click on the client icon on your Desktop to start the installation process.

  5. Choose to do a Complete installation and then complete the installation.

 Running a Live Update

  1. Once the installation is complete, double-click on the Gold Shield

    located in the system tray in the right bottom corner of your screen to open Symantec Antivirus. The version number should be for the client you downloaded and installed:

  2. Click once on Live Update to open the Live Update window.

  3. Click Next> to receive the latest virus definitions.

Actually, if you have an early version of Symantec Antivirus, I would recommend downloading an update directly from Symantec website: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/download/pages/US-SAVCE.html

I tried to download Symantec antivirus and it stopped at needing special permission for "HKey". Do I have to remove my old antivirus software 1st? thanks

Live update will update all of my 2003 servers.
