Objectives
In this Changing your Onyen Password Just-in-Time tutorial, you'll learn how to change your Onyen password.
Before You Start
To change your Onyen password, you will need access to a computer with a web browser and your current Onyen password.
Changing your Onyen Password
To begin, open a web browser and click on the navigation bar. Type onyen.unc.edu. This will bring you to the Onyen Services home page. In the Onyen management menu, find the "Manage Password†button and click on it. You will then be taken to the Onyen Password Management page. You will need to fill in your Onyen, your current password and your desired new password in two boxes on the page. When you are done, click the "Change Password" button.
If your new password does not meet the Onyen password guidelines, the system will not accept it. If this is the case, you should refer back to the guidelines found on the Onyen Password Management page.
If instead of using one of the randomly generated passwords you make up your own password, make sure that your new password has not been one you've used within the last year; that it is at least 8 characters long; that it contains a minimum of one letter and one digit; has at least one of the special characters shown on the screen; does not share six or more consecutive common characters with your Onyen; and, does not start with a hyphen, end with a backslash or contain a double-quote anywhere except at the end of the password.
Below the new password guidelines, you can also read about where to go if you forget your password and how to retrieve a lost or forgotten password from a remote location. The last portion of the page contains techniques for selecting memorable passwords that are hard for others to figure out. Once you have made up a suitable new password, scroll to the top of the page, type in your Onyen, your current password, and your new, suitable password in both the boxes on the screen. Then, click the "Change Password†button. If your new password meets all the criteria, you will be shown a screen indicating that your Onyen password has been successfully changed. Also on this screen, you can see when your new password expires.
