How do I get an Onyen?
Go to the Onyen services page. Click on Create an Onyen. You must have a UNC PID number in order to create an Onyen.
If you do not already have a UNC PID number, go to How to Get A PID for information on obtaining one.
Here are the steps you would follow when creating an Onyen:
1. Go to and click on Create an Onyen:
2. If you agree with the Onyen policy, then accept the Terms of Agreement and click on Continue:
3. You must have a PID (Person ID Number) in order to create an Onyen. Enter your Last Name and PID and click on Continue:
4. Make sure that both Create AFS file space and Create email account on email.unc.edu are checked and click on Continue:
5. The system will suggest an Onyen; however, you also have the choice of creating your own. If you would like to select a different Onyen, click on the radio button to the left of I prefer to select a different Onyen and click on Continue. If the Onyen is satisfactory, click Continue:
6. For security purposes, Onyen passwords must meet certain complexity requirements, as listed on this page. Enter your new UNC Onyen and your new password in each of the second two textboxes and click Continue:
7. This screen informs you that the default e-mail address published to the campus directory will be onyen@email.unc.edu. Click Continue:
8. Enter your new UNC Onyen and new password for verification purposes. Click Continue:
9. Here, the actual Onyen is created. After the process is complete, click Continue:
10. This page provides insight concerning Onyen password security policy. Read each bulleted note, and click Continue:
11. Finally, depending on your affiliation to the University, your Onyen may be subscribed to additional services (for example, Calendar) for your convenience. You may also subscribe to additional services any time by navigating to and clicking Subscribe to Services. Click Done to return to and complete this process.
