[Exchange] Microsoft Outlook Configuration

Overview and Configuration Settings

The University Campus Exchange account can be configured on Outlook. This document is written to take a person through the Exchange Email Configuration on Outlook. In order to setup your account, please follow the instructions below.

Configuration Settings
  • User Name: Onyen
  • Password: Onyen Password
  • Server: outlook.unc.edu
  • Domain: AD

Windows Exchange Setup

Outlook 2013

  1. Open Outlook 2013.
    NOTE: If your computer is on the AD domain and you have already signed in, when you open Outlook, your account should be automatically configured.
  2. If your computer is not on the domain and this is your first time opening the program, you will initially see a screen that prompts you to create a new email account. If you have already used and configured Outlook on this computer in the past, start by clicking the File tab and then choose Info. Click on Add Account.

  3. When the Add New Account box opens, you will be prompted to enter your account information including:
    • Your Name
    • Email Address
    • Password
    • Verify Password

    Once you enter this information, click on .

  4. Your account will now authenticate and finish configuring.
    Please note that your account may take 2 – 3 minutes to complete authentication if you are on the UNC network. If you are outside the network, authentication may take 5 – 10 minutes.

  5. You may be prompted to allow auto-discover. Check the box by Don’t ask me about this website again. Click Allow.

  6. After the configuration process completes, click Finish.

  7. You will now be prompted to restart Outlook. Click OK.

  8. Open Outook 2013 again and log back in with your Onyen and Password.

Outlook 2010

  1. Open Outlook 2010.
    NOTE: If your computer is on the AD domain and you have already signed in, when you open Outlook, your account should be automatically configured.
  2. If your computer is not on the domain, and this is your first time opening the program, then you will initially see a screen that prompts you to create a new email account. If you have already used and configured Outlook on this computer in the past, start by clicking the File tab and then choose Info. Click on Add Account.

  3. When the Add New Account box opens, you will be prompted to enter your account information including:
    • Your Name
    • Email Address
    • Password
    • Verify Password

    Once you enter this information, click on Next.

  4. Your account will now authenticate and finish configuring.
    Please note that your account may take 2 – 3 minutes to complete authentication if you are on the UNC network. If you are outside the network, authentication may take 5 – 10 minutes.

  5. After the configuration process completes, click Finish.
  6. You will now be prompted to restart Outlook and log back in with your Onyen and password.

Outlook 2007

  1. Open Outlook 2007.
    • If this is your first time opening the program, then you will initially be taken to a screen that will prompt you to create a new email account and you can skip to Step 3.
    • If you have used and configured Outlook for an account in the past, then begin by clicking on Tools and choosing Account Settings.


  2. Click New in order to create a new email account.
  3. On the Add New E-mail Account screen choose to add a Microsoft Exchange, POP3, IMAP, or HTTP account and click Next.
  4. You will now be prompted to enter your account information including:
    • Your Name
    • E-mail Address
    • Password
    • Once you have entered your information for these items click Next to continue.
    Please be aware that after you click Next the authentication process may take 2 to 3 minutes.

  5. If you see the following screen and are prompted with: “The name on the security certificate is invalid or does not match the name of the site. Do you want to proceed?” Please click Yes to continue.
  6. You will be prompted for your authentication credentials. Please enter these in the form and click OK:
    • User name: ad\your onyen
    • Password: your onyen password

  7. After successfully authenticating you should see the following screen indicating that Your e-mail account is successfully configured to use Microsoft Exchange. From here click Finish. This completes the Outlook 2007 Exchange configuration and will open the program for you.

Mac Exchange Setup

Outlook 2011

Note: The client (only) is available for download at http://shareware.unc.edu.
  1. Begin by opening Outlook 2011 for Mac.
    • If this is your first time opening the program then you will initially be taken to a screen that will prompt you to create a new email account and Outlook will attempt to configure your account automatically.
    • If you have used and configured Outlook for an account in the past, then begin by clicking on Outlook and choosing Preferences to add or modify an account.

  2. Click Exchange Account in order to configure a new Exchange email account.
  3. Enter your Exchange email address, your Onyen (User name) and Onyen Password. Click Add Account.
  4. A window may appear that indicates the connection was redirected to outlook.unc.edu, this is normal and you may feel free to allow the response from the server.
  5. After successfully authenticating you should see the following screen. A green ‘light’ next to the account name indicates that your e-mail account is successfully configured with UNC’s Microsoft Exchange service.

Outlook 2016

  1. Begin by opening Outlook 2016 for Mac.
    • If this is your first time opening the program then you will initially be taken to a screen that will prompt you to create a new email account and Outlook will attempt to configure your account automatically.
    • If you have used and configured Outlook for an account in the past, then begin by clicking on Outlook and choosing Preferences to add or modify an account. INSERT

  2. Click +v  and choose Exchange in order to configure a new Exchange email account.

  3. Enter your Exchange email address, your Onyen (User name) and Onyen Password. Click Add Account.
