HeelMail Office365 Setup on Android

  • On Feb 9, 2015, ITS Security blocked the Microsoft Outlook App for Android, due to security concerns. If you have the application installed it will not connect to UNC Servers.
  • On March 8th, 2015, The university has transitioned (only for HeelMail users) to Office365. You will need to change your account settings. Please see the settings below for Mobile Device (Android). It may be necessary to remove and re-add your account.

The University HeelMail (Live@Edu) application can be configured on some Android Devices. We have been able to setup a HeelMail account on Android version 2.2.x plus. In order to setup your account, please follow the instructions below.

Basic Settings
Email Address onyen@live.unc.edu
User Name onyen@ad.unc.edu
Password Onyen Password
Server Name outlook.office365.com

Gathering the Server Name.

  • Login to HeelMail
  • Click on Question
  • Click on About
  • Under the About list, the Server name or Host Name (outlook.office365.com) address will be needed for the Exchange (Active Sync) Email Setup instructions below to configure the Android Device.

Exchange (ActiveSync) Email Setup on Android.

 

Setup on Android 4.x.x

This document is written to take a person through the Exchange Email Configuration on Android 4.x.x device. The instructions are written based on Android 4.2.x and using a Samsung Galaxy S4 phone. Some devices may look a little different but should follow the same process.

Step 1:

  • Select the email icon on your phone.
    • If you don’t have an email account setup you will be prompted to add one automatically.
    • If you already have an email account setup, while in the email app select, Menu which brings up email settings and select add account.
    • Or you may click on the Apps icon and Settings icon, then click on accounts and add account.

  • Enter your onyen@live.unc.edu email address and your Onyen password then select Next.

  • Select Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync as the Account type

Manual Settings
  • If your settings look like the following:
  • Domain:  Leave blank
    Username: onyen@ad.unc.edu
  • Or if you see domain\username enter your: onyen@ad.unc.edu email address (remove ” \ ” and leave username).
  • Enter your onyen password in the provided field.
  • Enter outlook.office365.com in the server field.
  • Select Use secure connection (SSL) as security type and Accept all SSL Certificates if the option is available.
  • After automatic setup you will be prompted about Remote security administration.
    This allows the exchange server to be able to connect to your device remotely (i.e. If you lose your device you may wipe the email account using live.unc.edu).
  • Click OK.

Step 4:

  • Set how frequently you want your email to update from the email by selecting the frequency from the drop down menu.
  • You are also given the option to set Heelmail Account as your default Email Account.
    Please note if you leave the default option to Sync SMS you will receive emails for every text message received. To remove this option you can un-check the box by Sync SMS.

Step 5:

  • On the Activate device administrator? screen.
  • Click Activate.

Step 6:

  • Input a name in the Give this account a name(optional) field for your email account.
    • You can add a name to the field (i.e. UNC Heelmail).
  • Select Done (your email will start to synchronize).

Setup on Android 2.x.x

The University is providing instructions based on stock Android version 2.3 and using Exchange ActiveSync Connection.

Note: Some Android OS or devices’ version may vary as to how the HeelMail Accounts are added. If the instructions below are different than what you see on your Mobile Device then please check with your Mobile Devices Vendor for support on how to setup an Exchange (ActiveSync) account. The basic settings above will still apply.

*Android 2.3.6 users: The University support staff has noticed that some Android devices have changed their exchange email client to Corporate. Please use this when setting up the HeelMail account.

Step 1:

  • Select the email icon on your phone.
    • If you don’t have an email account setup you will be prompted to add one automatically.

  • Enter your onyen@live.unc.edu email address and your Onyen password then select Next.

  • Enter your Onyen password in the provided field.
  • Enter outlook.office365.com in the server field.
