How to Obtain Headers from an email?

If you are Faculty/Staff or Student, wanting to report a Phishing and/or SPAM  email please follow these instructions: http://help.unc.edu/help/how-to-forward-suspect-phishing-spam-email-messages-for-evaluation/.

The instructions below are intended for a technician or administrator assisting a Faculty/Staff or student in obtaining email headers. Note: Once the email headers are obtain you will need to copy and paste them into a text file, so they can be attached.

Obtaining Email Headers

Office 365 (OWA)

OWA
  1. Go to Outlook Web App.
  2. Right Click on the email.
  3. Click on View message details in the menu.

    • Check the Message Details Section

Outlook 2010

  1. Open the email by double left clicking on it.
  2. Click the File Tab.
  3. Click Properties.

    • Check the Internet Headers Section

Outlook 2013 and 2016 (Win)

  1. Open the email by double left clicking on it.
  2. Click the File Tab.
  3. Click Properties.

Outlook 2011 and 2016 (Mac)

  1. Right Click (Shift+Click).
  2. Click View Source.

Note: This will open a text file with the Header Information.

Mac Mail

  1. Highlight the email.
  2. Click on View.
  3. Click on Message.
  4. Click on Long Headers or Raw Source.

Thunderbird

  1. Highlight the email.
  2. Click on View.
  3. Click on Headers.
  4. Click on All.
  5. Click the Forward button.
  6. All the Header information is at the top of the email.
