IMAP Restores

 

The University has decommissioned all UNC IMAP accounts as of Jan 4th 2012.  This document is written to assist Current Affiliates in configuring the UNC IMAP account so you may retrieve your email.  Access to the http://webmail.unc.edu has been disabled.  Follow the instructions below to configure either Outlook or Thunderbird desktop client.  You will need a specific IP Address to configure the account in the desktop client.  Please contact 962-Help to obtain the IP Address. 

*The settings below are an attempt to assist you in retrieving your email from the UNC IMAP account. The University can only provide the settings and configuration instructions needed to connect the UNC IMAP account.  If you need any other configuration settings for alternate email accounts then please visit the vendors website for instructions on how to configure the desktop or email clients.  You are responsible for making sure you have the information needed to configure the email clients for your alternate email.

Configuration instructions for Connecting UNC IMAP:

Outlook 2007

The first time you run Outlook, it will prompt you to create a new email or newsgroup account. Click on the check box by

Manually configure server settings or additional server types then click Next. This will take you to the “Add New E-mail Account” window.

If you want to modify settings and preferences after the wizard is finished or manually create an account, you can do so by clicking on Tools ->Account Settings.

 

·       To modify settings for an existing account:

o   Click on the Email Tab

o   Click on the name of the account which by default will be onyen@email.unc.edu

o   Click on Change to go to the “Change E-mail Account” window

·       To add an additional or new account:

o   Click on Email Tab then on New…

o   Click on Next to go to the “Add New E-mail Account”window

 
 

To edit Outgoing Mail Server Settings, click on More Settings, and then go to the Outgoing Server tab.

It is important to check My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication and select Use same settings as my incoming server to allow sending e-mail using your UNC e-mail account from off-campus.

 

To edit the Mail Server Port Settings, click on the Advanced tab.

 
Email Encryption Configuration Instructions

In order to set up TLS, please use port143 for Incoming server (IMAP) and choose TLSfor the drop down box to the right of Use the following type of encrypted connection. Type587 for Outgoing server (SMTP), and choose TLS for the drop down box to the right of Use the following type of encrypted connection. 

 
 
 
 

 

Once finished editing your settings, click on OK->Next->Finish

Outlook 2011 Mac

If you are configuring Outlook 2011 first the first time, you are presented with this screen. You may import your settings or click Add Account.
 
 
 
To add an IMAP account, click E-mail Account.
 
 
 
Enter the following information, then click Add Account.
 
 
 
Then, in the Finder Bar, go to Outlook –> Preferences. In the Outlook Preferences window, click Accounts.
 
 
 
In the Accounts window, on the right-hand side, click More Options. For Authentication, choose Use Incoming Server Info. Click OK.
 
 

Thunderbird

1.

The first time you run Thunderbird it will offer to auto-configure the client for you. Although the auto-configuration will fail, it will be necessary for you to enter your information in order to continue the configuration process.

After the Auto-configuration fails click Manual Setup… to proceed.

 
 
 3.

Fill out the Server Settings section with the following information. Please note that some of the information already filled out by the auto-configuration wizard may be incorrect, and will need to be changed.

  • Server Name: IP Address
  • Port: 143
  • User Name: your Onyen
  • Connection security: STARTTLS
  • Authentication method: Normal password

Note: You may receive a Security Exception. Please choose to confirm security exception.

After completing the Server Settings section click the item for Outgoing Server (SMTP) in the left-hand pane, and then click the Edit… button on the right of the window.

 
 

5.

Fill out the SMTP Server section with the following information.  Please note that some of the information already filled out by the auto-configuration wizard may be incorrect, and will need to be changed.  When finished click the OK button.

  • Description: UNC SMTP
  • Server Name: smtp.unc.edu
  • Port: 587
  • Connection security: STARTTLS
  • Authentication method: Normal password
  • User Name: your Onyen
