The University recommends that Microsoft Security Essentials be installed on any personal computer used by Faculty, Staff, or Students. For University-owned computers, Microsoft System Endpoint Protection is recommended.
Please follow the instructions below to install Microsoft Security Essentials.
- You will need to uninstall Symantec Anti-Virus before you can install Microsoft Security Essentials. Please visit Migration from Symantec to Microsoft Antivirus for more information.
- If you are a Windows 8 user then the Microsoft Security Essentials comes with Windows Defender. Please visit http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/security-essentials-download for more information.
Please go to shareware.unc.edu to download Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE).
A restart is required for this install.
Click Yes to allow access for the User Account Control (UAC) to install the client.
Click I accept.
Click the radio button I do not want to join the program at this time.
Check the box If no firewall is on, turn on Windows Firewall (Recommended).
By default the check box Scan my computer for potential threats ofter getting the latest updates is checked.
Click Finish, then restart your computer.
