Migration from Symantec to Microsoft Antivirus

Effective August 1, 2013, the UNC-Chapel Hill for any antivirus software licensed by Symantec will expire. Symantec will be replaced with antivirus software by Microsoft.  Please see What is the University’s recommended Antivirus software? for more information.

  • All Symantec-branded antivirus software, including SEP11, SAV10 or older, must be removed from all university-owned or -managed devices.
  • In addition, any personally owned device that is running Symantec Antivirus downloaded from the UNC shareware site (shareware.unc.edu) or installed on a CCI personal device must be removed to avoid violating the license agreement between UNC Chapel Hill and Symantec.

Personally owned devices:

Any computer running Symantec antivirus (screenshot of SEP11 icon/shield) must have SEP11, SAV10 or an older version of SAV removed and replaced with Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE), available on shareware.unc.edu. If you are a Windows 8 user then the Microsoft Security Essentials is built in to Windows Defender.  Please visit http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/security-essentials-download for more information.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Why are we converting our Antivirus product?
Microsoft Forefront provides highly cost effective solutions to protect campus workstation and server security.  Independent tests show that Microsoft Forefront competes at comparable levels with Norton, McAfee, and other brand name antivirus and anti-malware solutions.

I have a Mac OS system, how do I convert my antivirus?
Microsoft does not currently offer a managed antivirus solution for Mac OS; therefore, ITS recommends that you install ClamXav.  Like a PC, Symantec antivirus must be removed from your system before installing a new antivirus product. Please visit the Symantec Endpoint Protection SEP11 for Mac document for information on how to uninstall Symantec.

Detailed instructions showing how to install install ClamXav on a Mac OS may be found at: https://help.unc.edu/help/clamx-antivirus/
