UNC-PSK Configuration for Mac OS X

Note:  If you are using another Operating System other than Mac OS X, then visit the document Connecting to the UNC Wireless Network – Getting Started to select your Operating System or device. This document was written for version 10.7 (Lion) through 10.9 (Mavericks) of the Mac OS X operating system. Earlier 10.x versions may look slightly different than the screenshots below. If so, please view the Help in your system for more details or instructions. 

Due to many issues with wireless connections dropping while on Mac OS X.  The University recommends that you first disable IPV6.  Please click here for instructions on how to disable IPV6 based on Mac OSX version.  Then please follow the configuration instructions below.

Find Your Wi-Fi ID (Also known as Network/MAC Address)

This section will explain how to find the MAC Address for your Wi-Fi adapter.  You must register the Ethernet MAC address in order to use the wired campus network.  If you’re using the Wireless Network named UNC-Secure, you can skip this step entirely.

  • Click on the Apple menu in the top left corner of your screen and select System Preferences. (You can also click the System Preferences icon in the Dock).

  • Under the Internet & Wireless preferences group, click the Network icon.

  • Choose Wi-Fi from the navigation list to the left and then press the Advanced… button in the bottom right.

  • Your Mac Address is displayed under the Hardware tab. Be sure to write this down EXACTLY as it appears on your screen. This is your Wireless MAC Address.

Registering Your Wi-Fi ID

Once you have obtained your Wi-Fi ID (Mac Address) you will to need to register it by doing the following:

  • Go to a computer or device already connected to the Internet.
  • Visit the Onyen Services page at onyen.unc.edu.
  • Choose the DHCP Registration link. You will need your Onyen, Onyen password, and Mac address, to register your computer.

    It may take 30 minutes for your registration to process through our servers.

Configuring Wi-Fi for UNC-PSK

In order to connect the UNC-PSK you will need the Pre-shared key.

  • Go to a computer or device already connected to the Internet.
  • Visit the document What is the UNC-PSK SSID to obtain the pre-shared key.
  • Once you have the key please do the following:

 

    • Click on the Apple menu in the top left corner of your screen and select System Preferences. (You can also click the System Preferences icon in the Dock).

    • Under the Internet & Wireless preferences group, click the Network icon.

    • Choose Wi-Fi from the navigation list to the left and then press the drop down menu by Network Name.

    • Choose Join Other Network on the pop-up menu.
    • Input the following settings on the Find and Join a Wi-Fi network pop-up screen:

       Network Name: UNC-PSK

      Security: WPA2-Personal

      Password:  Pre-shared Key
