Managing Software Updates

Campus IT uses the Software Center to manage and push Microsoft updates to computers that are on the Active Directory domain. Primarily it will be Faculty and Staff members that will have computers on the Active Directory domain.  The document is written based upon what Main Campus IT follows, your department may follow a different update schedule.

Update Schedule

Your department may use a different update schedule then Main Campus IT.  You will need to contact your local IT department for more information on the schedule they will follow.  Below is an example of how this works for Main Campus IT:

Microsoft typically releases new updates on the 2nd Tuesday of the month.  As soon as these updates are released, they are deployed to a group of test users who have opted-in to help test the updates.  On the 3rd Tuesday, the updates are published, causing a notification on client computers that updates are available.

On computers that receive this notification you can choose to do one of the following:

  • To install these updates immediately
  • Schedule them for a specific time
  • Configure your computer to automatically install the updates outside of your normal working hours.

The user of the computer receiving the update notification has 1 week to install the updates on their computer at an opportune time.  The deadline is for the 4th Tuesday of the month at 2 AM.  If the updates are not installed before this deadline, they will automatically install at the first available opportunity.  Once the updates are installed, a 4-hour restart timer will begin counting down.  The person must save their work and restart their computer before this timer elapses.

Please Note:  To avoid an unexpected reboot, Main campus IT recommends installing the updates, or scheduling the install, during the “grace period” week between the 3rd and 4th Tuesdays of the month.  As a member of a different department, this may be whatever date the department sets as a deadline.

Update Notification

When new updates are available, a notification will pop-up in the notification area of the Windows taskbar.  If you click this icon, a dialog will present you with a few options.  You can choose to apply the updates immediately, schedule the updates outside of business hours, or set to “Restart my computer automatically if needed”.


Setting Working Hours

The Software Center allows you to set your work schedule please follow the instructions below.

  1. Open Software Center and click Options
  2. In the “Work information” section, set the days and hours you typically use your computer. Updates will be installed outside of these times.
  3. Click the Apply button.


Automatically Schedule Updates Outside Working Hours

  1. Open Software Center and click Options
  2. Expand the “Computer maintenance” section.
  3. In the “Computer maintenance” section, check the “Automatically install or uninstall required software and restart the computer only outside of the specified business hours” checkbox.
  4. Click the Apply button.
