As a best practice the University recommends that you keep your software up to date on a regular basis. This software includes, Operating Systems, Web Browsers, and Web applications/ web browser plug-ins. Leaving these unattended can leave them open to attacks and breach in sensitive information.
How to update you operating system:
Turn on Windows update so that all new updates are automatically installed.
- Click on the Start Menu
- Click on the Control Panel
- Click on System and Security
- Click on Windows Update
Note: Check with your technical support to make sure software updates are occurring on your system(s).
Mac OS X
- Click on the apple menu
- Click on Software Update
- Click on install by the updates you want to install
- Restart the computer if it is required by the update.
Note: You will be prompted for a user name and password that has administrative access.
How to update your web browsers:
Internet Explorer: ***DO NOT USE INTERNET EXPLORER***
Safari: Updated through Software Updates or Apple App Store.
How to update web applications/browser plug-ins:
Adobe Acrobat Reader
Adobe Flash Player
Java (If you do not need Java, it is best to remove it from your computer)
To check on which version or if Java is even installed, please do the following:
- Go to http://java.com.
- Click on Do I have Java?
- Click on Verify Java version button.
- Click Agree and Continue, if prompted.
- Follow any prompts to install Java if needed.
